We will also start reviewing for our upcoming reading test on October 2nd. In word study we will look at irregular plural words. WritingThis week in writing we will be learning how to transfer what we learned about fiction writing to other projects! We will be exploring our creative side by writing other forms of fiction, such as graphic novels!
Also, in writing this week we are prepping for our grammar test on WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 25th! The review went home on Tuesday, September 17th. Please make sure your child is reviewing, identifying, and using these important grammar terms. Practice with your child with adjectives, nouns, adverbs, possessive nouns, verbs, contractions.

ReadingThis week in reading- Characters are complicated! We will discuss ways to study the complexities of the characters in our books. We will examine their choices, relationships, and motivations and continue to grow ideas about our characters. Next, we will use these insights to form debatable ideas and improve our conversations about books. WritingThis week in writing we are going to talk about the importance of our writing spaces and study mentor texts to get ideas of strategies we can add to our writing. We will also continue the process of editing our writing for several different things in order to get it ready to publish!
We will celebrate all of our hard work by having the opportunity to experience what it feels like to be a famous author at our book publishing party! We will publish our writing in book form, and contribute to our class anthology. Lastly, we will see how we can transfer what we’ve learned in writing fiction to other areas of writing. WritingThis week in writing, we will be looking at revisions! Specifically, we will learn how to revise our work and we will focus on finding a good ending that fits with our story. The “Key Questions Fiction Writers Consider in Revising Endings” anchor chart below is a helpful tool for your writer. Also, we will be learning about open syllables, closed syllables, and VCe (magic e) patterns in word study. Learning about these patterns will help us with our spelling while writing. Our homework in writing this week is over these word study patterns. Feel free to use the anchor chart below to help, if needed!
Our character quest continues! We will look closely at the complicated characters in our just right books. We will continue to practice our understanding of character traits and motivations as we read intensely. Look for our September reading log beginning to come home this week and help encourage your child to log his or her reading! We have a test on Thursday, September 5th! The review sheet was sent home on Thursday, August 29th. Please review at home. We will review the content in class as well. Fourth grade will visit the library every Friday. Writing - September 2nd-6thThis week in writing, we are going to practice adding more details to our writing by jotting down our ideas scene by scene. In order to do this, we will describe our character’s actions, dialogue, movements, and reactions. We can put ourselves in our character’s shoes to help us think of the details! We will also look at amazing mentor texts in order to get an idea of things we can include in our writing.
We are reading our just right texts intensely! We will continue to practice reading workshop and using our just right books to grow ideas about characters. The students will practice using sticky notes to write their thoughts about characters while reading. Library begins this week! Our library day is Fridays. Students enjoyed our Book Tasting! They were able to enjoy learning about different genres while "dining" and chatting about their favorites with their peers, snacking on some yummy tidbits, and listening to cafe music in the background! Writing - August 26-30thThis week in writing we are learning that our lives are full of small moments that can become fascinating stories! To begin our adventure, we will learn the art of the quick write. From our quick writes, we will make decisions and revise like all great writers do! We are also practicing developing our characters by making a list of internal and external characteristics. Here is an example:
Reading - August 19-23rdThis week in reading, we began looking at our classroom libraries and setting up expectations and procedures! We set some goals for ourselves as readers this year and will start working on these goals next week! We will also dive into our read aloud texts and notice character traits, setting, and other story elements to grow as readers. We are also looking forward to exploring different genres this week to get ready for the year! Writing - August 19-23rdThis week in writing, we will continue to brainstormed significant memories from our lives that can become fascinating stories! Last week, we recorded these memories on a balloon map that tied in with our read aloud. Throughout the year, we will look back on our balloon map to help inspire us about topics to write about. This week, we will reflect on our summer and continue to generate ideas.
